Son on Father's Shoulders

The Rewards of Parenting

My husband went to work today with stars on the back of his shirt.

What really happened though?

My son came from school with three stars on the back of his hand and showed them off to me proudly.

“Yay! I’m so proud of you, Zaviar! Did you also show Baba?” I asked him because Baba was the one who went in to pick him up.

“No… Shhhh!” he whispered as he proceeded to stick the stars on the back of his dad’s shirt, grinning.

“Okay..Okay!” I played along because memories are better than stars on the hand.

“What’s happening?” asked my husband smiling. He gently flicked off one of the stars thinking that was it. “What is everyone at my office going to say Zaviar?” he joked around. “What did Baba do that Aunty gave him a star?” Okay, I think that one was more to bug me. I raised my eyebrows as they both laughed away.

He was on his way to a meeting. A physical meeting. Yes, that clarification was needed because most meetings nowadays are on Zoom. So let’s see how many of his colleagues ask him why he got two stars. Lol.

On a serious note, I remember being told of an incident where a father didn’t want his child to sit in his lap because his clothes will get crumpled. That is the kind of parenting we want to avoid.

No meeting is worth more than a smile on your child’s face. And frankly, we are all working very hard to be the best versions of ourselves for our children and deserve a pat on the back. Sometimes, that means we deserve stars for our parenting.

Sometimes, it means we are star parents.
